Wireless device servers are an excellent new way to wirelessly network serial (RS232, RS422 & RS485) devices.
Capitalising on the success of the serial to Ethernet converter and employing similar technology, the wireless device server uses 802.11b/g wireless LAN to connect serial devices to an IP network without wires.
Ad-hoc mode: This allows a pair of wireless device servers to be used in tandem (like a radio modem) to transmit serial data point-to-point.
Infrastructure mode: This uses a wireless Access Point as a gateway to the wired LAN and allows point-to-multipoint connections on the wireless side.
A massive advantage of infrastructure mode is that the wireless device server's serial ports can be configured to appear as a COM port in a remote PC allowing seamless integration with existing application software.
The AWK-1100 is a multi-purpose industrial wireless Access Point / client / bridge. Combine this product with the WLAN antennae available further down the page and almost any solution for wireless Ethernet is feasible. They can also be used in conjunction with the wireless device servers for a complete serial solution.
